Christmas Come Early

Our boys recently decided they wanted a basketball goal. Funny thing, our neighborhood had this covenant saying you could only have them behind the house, and we didn’t have a spot big enough behind the house to fit one. Most everyone thought the covenant was stupid, but no one ever did anything to change it, including me. It had never been an issue for our baseball and football playing, hunting, fishing boys. Luckily, Ms. Laura & Mr. John took on the daunting task of changing the covenants, and they did it! My boys couldn’t be more happy!
This is the first year they have played basketball, and the goal is truly their new favorite thing.Jackson plays on an 8 foot goal, so I was surprised to see him making it on the full size goal. Not to worry, we can get it down to 8 feet, but he doesn’t want us, too. The goal was set up by yesterday afternoon, and the boys played until way after dark.Thank you Ms. Laura & Mr. John!

I Brought Home Flowers

Apparently Wal-mart orders too many Mother’s Day flowers, otherwise, I wouldn’t have run across three huge bins of flowers for $3.00 a bunch on Monday.Fresh flowers are totally worth $1 a day, don’tcha think?

Christian’s Room

Truly, it’s a miracle that I found these photos. I searched for two days through huge picture boxes and went through countless folders of pictures on old hard drives. If you think I have a lot of digital photos, imagine what I accumulated while shooting film. Some things were just lost in the craziness, but luckily, I still have my scrapbooks documenting Christian’s every second of life until he was 5. The nursery was very similar to Jackson’s, except Christian had it first. There were stars and moons everywhere, but the room was in a different house. When it was time to move into the big boy room at the new house, we hired a friend to paint a mural on the wall to match his quilt. It was ADORABLE! The road circled the entire room and had the cutest dog riding, hiding and even sometimes driving the little truck. Christian said he didn’t even remember having his room like this. Really? After all that? I still have this entire set because it was just too cute to part with. Our friend did such a fabulous job on the mural, but she got me thinking that I could give something a little more challenging than stars a try. Just like Jackson decided he was too big for his “big boy” room, Christian did the same. Only, instead of football being the new love, it was baseball. As usual, I found a cool quilt, and we set off to decide what I would paint on the walls.I decided to mimic the players on his quilt across the wall, only I changed every other guy into a uniform that Christian had worn, now is that personal or what?! I never did change the orange jersey down at the end to blue for his Braves team, even though Christian mentioned it from time to time. Sometimes I’m just a bad Momma, what can I say?I painted his white dresser red, and made the door pulls look like baseballs. It was a hit, and it was good to be a big boy.Around the time Jackson started pushing for a bigger boy room, Christian started pushing for a more grown up room. Do you know how hard it was to change my boys rooms to mural free zones? But ya know, it’s not about me anymore, it’s about them. Christian and I thumbed through PBTeen, yes TEEN, and found a good quilt. He didn’t want a theme, but he did want a little outdoorsy, hunting thing going, just small touches he could get rid of if he got tired of it.He really loves it, and I have to say, it is very age appropriate. Hopefully it will get him into his teenage years, but then I’m painting another mural, dammit!

Jackson’s Room

When Jackson was a baby, we already had a nursery. We spent days painting and decorating everything just so. We used Christian’s things, but we added some touches to make it just his. Everyone helped. I’m a big wall painter. Since it was stars and moons, we carefully covered all the walls with stars. Maw Maw Tuck made a valance and I painted it and the table cover to match the dust ruffle. We painted Scott’s Granny’s old rocking chair white and recovered the cushions to match. It was perfect for him and I was happy. When we got rid of this room, I almost cried. No more little babies sleeping under mobiles, and everyone had moved up to the big boy rooms. It was almost too much to bear. Back then I was a scrapbooker and Mom and I carefully took pictures and made pages of every little detail.When it was time for a big boy bed, Jackson was into tractors… BIG TIME. He loved anything with wheels and was so excited when I found a quilt that had all those special things he loved.We worked a lot in the nursery, but it doesn’t even compare to the amount of time I spent painting roads and vehicles from his quilt across these walls. I can remember the kids going to bed, and I’d be up on a ladder until midnight. I told you I liked to paint on walls. I even embroidered the pillowcases to match his theme. I wanted everything just right for his first big boy room. He loved it. He was so proud of the tractors and police cars I painted. It was perfect for him, and I was happy.Not too long ago, Jackson decided his room was too baby and he was ready to move on. He was beyond firetrucks and tractors and wanted to change it to his new love… FOOTBALL. I knew it was time, but secretly I was devastated. Seriously. I think I shed a tear as the roads were disappearing under brown paint. He deliberated over which football quilt to get for days. We decided that murals were out, but he has requested that I paint three pictures to go above the bed. As soon as I get a third canvas, I’ll get right on that. So here it is, in all it’s glory… Jackson’s new room!This is the first time one of my boys didn’t have some sort of mural on their walls, and to be honest, I’m a little sad. But Jackson, he loves it.It’s perfect for him and I am happy. Hopefully one day I’ll have a reason to paint all over the wall again, even if it’s just for myself, but until then, I guess I need to get started on those canvases!P. S. I hope to do the same post with Christian’s rooms through the years, but I’m having a harder time finding all the pictures. Film pictures are always harder to locate. I’ll do my best!

Operation Relocation

We’ve got some kind of animal scurrying around in our ceiling. It’s really freaking me out. Late at night, I can hear it, or them having a party up there. We’ve been debating as to what kind of rodents have taken up residence. Scott and I both thought flying squirrels, but we didn’t discount the idea of mice, or god forbid, rats. We finally had to take action, and when I say we, I mean Scott.We, again, that means Scott, already caught five flying squirrels in two days. Aren’t they cute? Cute, yes! Welcome in my house? That’s a negatory ghost-rider. Operation relocate flying squirrels is a go!

Lost in the Mail

We’ve been working on Christmas cards, and to be honest, it’s not going well. At least we finished decorating the tree. I managed to get a good picture of it, wish I could say the same about my two kids. Tell me again why I try to do Christmas cards every year?!

Just Not the Same

So my boys went hunting this weekend… ALL of them. I opted to stay home and enjoy the silence. The first day was great. I spent a quiet afternoon by the pool with Mom and Dad, then dinner and a movie with Laura. I came home, checked my email and went to bed with both dogs. My plan for the next day included getting up reasonably late and enjoying another day in the pool, then watching a little football. There would be no one yelling every 30 seconds, “Watch this Momma!” I wouldn’t get begged to rate each and every dive from 0 to 10. I wouldn’t have to count how many seconds they stayed underwater or how many flips they just did at one pop. I wouldn’t get asked to fix anyone lunch, and I wouldn’t have to pick up all the crap they left laying around while getting ready to swim or getting back into their clothes when they were done. It would be glorious. I could just lay by the pool and read a book. I made it out there around 11 and assumed my position in my chair. Fifteen minutes in I realized that there was no one asking me to watch them. I hadn’t gotten squirted with a water gun, or asked to referee a race. I wasn’t required to fish every bee and spider out of the pool, and no one asked me to sunscreen their back or get them a drink. But glorious, it was not. I was bored. Apparently I don’t like laying by the pool reading a book by myself. Sitting there sucks, and I’d rather rate dives, and wear silly goggles. This house, this pool, this day just isn’t the same without them in it. I spent the rest of my afternoon watching football and waiting for my boys to get home.

Coming Home

Before driving home, we failed to check the radar. Huge mistake. The weather was bad, so bad in fact I was sure we would never see Mississippi again. Finally, about 40 minutes from home it cleared and there was the most vibrant and gorgeous double rainbow that I have ever seen. Unfortunately I was driving, so I couldn’t really get the camera out and do much except point it in the direction I wanted, hope it focused, and snap away. Okay, so you don’t see how awesome it really was, but a snippet is better than nothing at all. Plus, we are home, so there’s a good thing… Right?

Under Construction

Okay, there isn’t really any construction going on, but there is a lot of painting. Why did I think that painting a few rooms would only take a day and not interfere with our lives? Turns out that painting a few rooms can turn the entire house upside down and displace us out of our bed for a few nights. Due to the fact that I was so very wrong, I have no pictures of my kids. I will hopefully have some pictures of a light, bright bedroom in the next week. Sorry Mom!

Laid Back Down

I’m sick, like stay in bed all day, take medicine, and feel like crap… the whole nine yards. My dogs stayed right by my side the entire day. When I finally got up and drug myself downstairs, Lulu resumed her sleeping position, this time in the sun. I had to take a picture. Then I decided to do what every sick person should do, clean out the refrigerator and bleach everything in sight. Then, I laid back down. You know it’s an exciting day when I post a picture of my clean refrigerator. Sorry for that.
