Hunting Butterflies

I feel a little guilty that this may be my last post for awhile, and it’s just butterflies, but it is what it is. I was watching Ole Miss play football by myself yesterday, and I got so disgusted that I went outside to take pictures of butterflies. I was watching alone because everyone in my family wrote them off after the whole Black Bear thing, well, except Jackson, but he doesn’t have much of an attention span. Don’t get me wrong, I am by no means a Black Bear supporter, but something in me still feels like a Rebel. That part of me is disappearing little by little every day, in fact, on this day, it was knee deep in the lantana with a camera.It always feels like I’m looking in on some really private moments when I take pictures of butterflies. It also makes something I usually find beautiful look a little creepy. When Jackson got word that I was looking for butterflies, he was in. Be very, very quiet, I’m hunting butterflies!See that little butterfly trying to sneak by him? Well, Jackson didn’t!My computer is heading to the doctor tomorrow, hopefully it will be a quick fix, but in the event that it isn’t, I’ll be back when I can.

Arctic Blast

This is my house when it was a biting 17° outside. I know it’s hard to tell. Other than the frost on the roof and ground, it looks like any other day. Well it wasn’t. It was freezing. After the boys left for school at 6:40 I bundled up and went to check out the bayou. On my way I was thinking how I’d better be careful on the bridge because it was covered in ice and I didn’t want to bust it. The thought was still going through my mind when I felt my feet go out from under me on the icy grass and I tumbled down the hill. Not far, but hard. Funny how it never occurred to me about the icy hill. I got up, and made my way even more carefully to the bayou.So worth it. It may chill you to the bone, but ice is pretty. Our pipe on the pier busted, so there was plenty of it to photograph. I won’t bore you with the 150 pictures I took, but here are a few cool ones I liked.This is a screw on the railing of our pier, surrounded by frost and shot with my macro lens. Looks weird, huh? …kind of like fairy dust.Here comes Scott to check on me. He figured there was no way I had spent that much time out in those temperatures. I must have slipped on the ice and fell into the bayou.When he found me safe and sound and taking pictures of ice, he entertained himself by throwing sticks onto the ice covered bayou. The ice was only about a quarter inch, but I still can’t believe it froze our bayou. This was about the time I ran inside and sat by the fire for an hour.

Macro Monday

Macro needs a whole day, and Monday it is! I love seeing things I normally wouldn’t see, like a butterfly tonguing my lantana.I found another little guy taking advantage of my flowers.I think I interrupted a private moment.

I’m Not THAT Scared

I had something else planned to post tonight, but I stayed up too late watching the Ole Miss game, which I don’t really want to talk about right now, so I’m posting more creepy critters instead. I had another snake today. I called Scott to describe it and as soon as I was fairly certain in wouldn’t kill me I ran and got my camera. My snake posed for me and barely moved a muscle. I’m not really that afraid of snakes, so I was pretty close just snapping away. When I got done with my photo shoot I went to get a stick to run him off so I could bring the dogs out. That’s when it got ugly. I expected him to turn and book it away from me as fast as he could, but that isn’t what happened. Instead, he turned, coiled up, rattled his tail and tried to attack my stick. I was a little surprised. He wasn’t backing down. Later, I was recounting the story to Scott expecting him to be shocked along with me and he was all, oh yeah, those things are aggressive. They will chase you but they aren’t poisonous. WHAT??? You let me go out there and get all close and personal with some snake that was more than likely going to chase me and bite me, but just not kill me? He’s so sweet… always looking out for me.

Another Excuse for Macro

While I haven’t gotten completely comfortable with my macro lens, there are so many things around here to practice on. I love that I can actually see the web coming out of it’s butt. If I can capture web shooting out of a spider ass, my job here is done.

Because He Loves Them So Much

I only take pictures of creepy crawly things for him, because honestly, I’d like to pretend these things don’t exist. These freakishly large monsters eat my plants and basically give me the heebie jeebies…but check out all the pretty colors.

Some New Subjects

Every once in awhile, I gotta give the punks a picture taking break. It must be difficult to be the child of a photographer, or wanna-be photographer, whatever. I’ve been meaning to break out my macro lens more and take some pictures of bugs and their nostril hair, so I decided today would be the day. Of course, I had trouble finding anything cool. Luckily, this moth was an excellent model and never gave me any lip. I looked around for a little bit longer, but all I could find was Love Bugs. I hate them, but they are EVERYWHERE. I took a picture of one, but it wasn’t nearly as fun as taking pictures of my punks, so I went inside. I have by no means given up on macro, but I have given up on Love Bugs.

Branching Out

This sweet boy has been begging me to take more pictures of creepy crawly things. Any time he finds a worm, centipede, lizard, snake, spider, etc., he’s sure it would look great on the blog. Well, don’t say I didn’t warn you…How’s it looking so far??
