Smoky Bokeh

If you aren’t into photography, then this probably will be some completely useless information for you. In fact, I can’t promise that it will be helpful either way. In photography, bokeh is the blur, or the aesthetic quality of the blur, in out-of-focus areas of an image. Depending on my settings, sometimes you’ll notice that my background is all out of focus. When I do this, it’s usually because I want to blur out the distracting background and put the focus on my subject, but I also love me some pretty bokeh! Okay, so for what I learned…Scott burned some stuff in the backyard this weekend, and we were there helping, which of course means standing around not helping at all.
Turns out smoke makes for some fancy bokeh.Check out the background in the next picture. It looks like brush strokes, and I’m digging it. Right about the time I realized this, Andrew came over, the Saints kicked off, and the fire went out. I can see that I’m going to be looking for things to set on fire in the future. Watch out!

Checking Out the Sunset

The boys wanted to go to a few of their favorite spots to find golf balls, and one of those spots happened to be one of my favorite sunset watching places. The sunset wasn’t quite the show it had been the days before, but it was still pretty, and I had to get a few shots. Something about that afternoon light just makes the photographer in me giddy. I knew when I took these I’d love them. I was right. This boy, this light, those eyes — may be my new favorite picture of him.It’s not often I get a picture of all my guys, and I was glad they allowed me a couple. I may have to drag them all back here every day for the rest of my life, or at least all summer!

Shoot the Moon

Class Work

Sometimes I have assignments for the class I’m taking, and there are no kids willing or able to help me. I have to look for other subjects. So what do ya think? Picture worthy?Yeah, I like it better when they help me, too.It’s not as cute when it’s a Star Wars Clone. And their muscles aren’t even close to this big!

Modeling Gig

I’m taking a photography class online and I’m working on my first assignment. I’ve made a deal with my kids. Family photos are just part of their life and they get nothing in return other than a well documented life, but being my guinea pig for various assignments deserves some sort of payment. This shoot cost me a dollar, and while I did get a few shots I love, I STILL haven’t completed the assignment. I forgot how horrible I was at doing homework!

Look for the Light

The one thing I’ve learned while taking all these pictures is I want light in my subject’s eyes. I’ll turn them in circles until I see what I want. Christian knows exactly what I’m up to when I start this business. He knows that tilting that head ever so slightly up can make a huge difference. Unfortunately, sometimes he thinks I want him to look directly at the light source, which results in pictures of him looking like he’s about to come up with an idea or he’s airplane watching. It may not be ideal, but those eyes are full of light and that makes me happy. Can you see the difference?

Hello Lover

Oh yeah, it is so on! How wrong is it that I missed my camera this bad? I think Canon sent it back early, and more than likely not fixed, just to get me to quit calling them. I don’t even care. It’s back, and that’s all that matters. I better run. My guys, my camera, my dogs and I need to spend a little quality family time together. You understand, don’tcha?
