Our Last Day in New Orleans

We started our last morning with a carriage ride around New Orleans, complete with a ride by the oldest bar in town, and a stroll by Brad and Angelina’s house, you know, the must see attractions! Next was a ride on a river boat, including lunch. It was a chilly day, then add in the wind off the water, and the kids were all huddled around trying to stay warm. They didn’t mind. They had a great time.Ok, and now I am officially done with field trip pictures! Moving on…

Can you find Christian in the sea of faces? I just realized that I never finished posting field trip pictures. I can’t seem to finish anything lately. I’m so late, maybe he won’t even notice that I’m posting pictures of him dancing with no password. I’m gonna get in trouble for the one with the “old” lady, I mean, come on, she’s at least 40!After a day of touring San Fransisco Plantation, dancing, and gumbo, we came back to the hotel and got dressed for a fancy dinner and the opera. While they were busy with that, we may or may not have been here. Don’t judge! Three jam packed days with 48 eleven and twelve year old kids, and you’ll need a hand grenade, too.

When They Turn 12

This week, Christian went on a field trip with the 6th grade Connections group, and I went with them. The first night was spent at Nottoway Plantation. We got there and quickly dressed for dinner. They took the kids on the ghost tour of the mansion, then brought them to the ballroom for dinner and dancing. They’ve been working on the waltz in the classroom for a month or so. Christian said he was a little unsure of his steps, but I couldn’t tell. Okay, here’s the part where I tell you that I have lots more dancing pictures, but something happens to a kid when he turns 12, he starts worrying about looking silly. So, if you see a password protected post occasionally, just know that I have pictures that I love that I want in my blog book, that my 12 year old would not like the world to see. Please bear with me. I promise, he’ll be back to normal in about 10 years or so. Thank you for your support, and we’d like to return you to the regularly scheduled program.

Grandparent’s Tea

In 2nd grade at Ocean Springs schools they have a Grandparent’s Tea, and it was finally Jackson’s turn. Mam Maw was there, too, but we didn’t break out the camera in time. Not that I got a chance to take any pictures, Scott and I were too busy helping with the food. Luckily, my mom had her camera. I stole this picture from her. Jackson was so excited to have his grandparents in his classroom, all the kids were. It was standing room only and was a huge success. What lucky kids I have! Thank you Grandparents!

Back to the Grind

Tap, tap. Is this thing on? Just kidding. I took a mini-vacation with my mom and sister, but I’m back, and just in time. Christian was having some serious trouble with a little math homework. Oh, who am I kidding… I was absolutely no help with that, but I am back, and things are getting back to normal. Well, as normal as they usually are around here.

Book Fair

Monday was Day 1 of the Book Fair. The boys always love to browse the rows of books and pick out their favorites. Every year, I spend at least 2 or 3 days at the school when all this business is going on, even more when both the boys were here. He chose a fun Lego Star Wars book, and a chapter book about Middle School. Wonder if the second book has anything to do with his big brother?He was so proud of his purchases and showed them to a few friends. Every night while Christian and Scott go to football practice, we get in our pajamas and snuggle up in my bed and read books. Book Fair is so awesome!

Coming Home

We worried all day about our boys, just hoping they would both have a good day. Finally, the time came to pick Jackson up. Looking good so far…A little squinty from the sun, but he doesn’t look like he was tortured all day. I’m hopeful.When he got close I realized he was covered in sweat from the bus ride home, but other than that, completely happy.On the ride home he told me he made a couple friends and he really liked his new teacher. I can’t ask for anything more than that!Now, for the one we were unsure of… would Christian get off the bus with a look of complete devastation? Wellllllllllll……..NO!The boys strolled into the neighborhood positively joyful.When I asked about his day, he said it was okay. He only went to the wrong classroom once, and he’s sure he won’t like Math. He loves his Social Studies teacher, and he felt the most comfortable in his Connections class because it was so small. Overall, he didn’t really like it. I didn’t believe him. Finally Scott asked him again with the disclaimer of I know it’s school, and it’s not cool to say you like it, but is 6th grade doable? His response without hesitation was, “Oh yeah!” So while he won’t be admitting it anytime soon, he likes the Middle School and I know he’s conquered another fear. The unknown is a scary, scary thing.

On Our Way

Normally, I’d take you through both going and coming on the first day of school, but I’m too tired. Jackson first, since he has to be at school earlier. How about that awesome new backpack? Jealous?Christian was a really good big brother, he got up much earlier than he had to so we could all ride with Jackson to drop him off. The school was all gussied up for the kids’ first day. It took everything in me not to demand that we get out and walk just so I could take a picture of them in front of this. Instead, we pulled in the drop off line, got some love, and he hopped out without a care in the world.Elementary school isn’t new, and he’s got it covered.We still had plenty of time before Christian’s drop off time, so we came back home. How I wish all schools would take up the Middle School’s schedule. I forced him to do a backpack shot. I could feel the I’m too old for this shit look I was getting, but it’s a really great backpack. Those looks don’t phase me.Middle School is new and Christian was still worried, but he gave us some love, we said our goodbyes, and he hopped out of the car.TO BE CONTINUED…
