We witnessed something in Destin that I’ve never seen or heard anything about in my life… ducks mating. I won’t go into the specifics, but let’s just say that if these were people, there would be 10 drakes awaiting trial dates as we speak.I’m scarred for life, but it’s nothing compared to what this hen went through.I wasn’t quite ready for that kind of education. All Christian would say was, “Did that just happen?” Yeah baby, it sure did. Moving on…

Redneck of the Month

The boys went with Maw Maw & Paw Paw to eat and the arcade, so Scott and I do what any parents left kid-less on a Friday night do, we rode around the neighborhood on the 4-wheeler with a glass of wine, for me at least. What? You don’t do that? Is that weird? We watched the alligator for 20 minutes with his top half underwater. I think he’s dead or something. I’m going to check tomorrow. Then Scott took me to the lot that he knows I want and I took some pictures.I mean, how can you not want that… just a little?The sun was setting, and the moon was rising… perfect time of day.On of our neighbors called to check on us, and asked if that was me hanging on the back of the 4-wheeler. When Scott said yes, he awarded us something better than the Yard of the Month tulip, we are officially the Rednecks of the Month! I hope this honor comes with a sign to stick in my front yard.

Whoever it was forgot to tell this Praying Mantis. I didn’t stick around to see who won, but by the time I left, it wasn’t looking to good for this guy.Look a little closer. I bet it ended up being a hummingbird feeder after all.

Baby Turtle

Maw Maw and Paw Paw found a baby turtle yesterday and brought it over to find it a safe place. I’m not sure this is what they had in mind.Don’t worry, only minimal handling before he found a nice spot, and we found some anti-bacterial hand soap.

Bird Watching

The kids had a very brave visitor while they were taking a break from fishing today. At first they were trying to be all quiet and still, but then realized they weren’t bothering their guest at all. They would get up, move around, laugh and talk, but their new friend wasn’t easily flustered.At first it was exciting, but after awhile, it was like, yeah, there’s a huge bird standing here beside me, so what?! Let’s play chase!

Bayou Bird

It was too muddy for us to fish Sunday, but this guy didn’t seem to mind. He spent all afternoon flying up and down the bayou looking for lunch. I had to get some pictures. Jackson said he was looking right at us!

Okay, This May Sound Weird

I live in a subdivision, and it is not a farming community. We do have wildlife out here; deer, gators, fox, rabbits, etc. etc, but never once have I seen a chicken. That is, until yesterday. The boys were both playing at a neighbor’s house so it was all quiet and nice, and then a chicken walked by my back door. I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me, so I grabbed my camera and ran to check it out. Sure enough, it was a chicken. IN MY BACKYARD! Turns out, chickens do NOT like me. Anytime I got close, she got all frantic and clucky and hauled ass. I managed to snap a couple of blurry pictures before she darted out the back fence. I called Scott and my neighbor, and I think they both thought I was crazy. Later, Scott went in the garage to close up for the night. He came back in yelling for me to come see something. I guess little miss clucky pants couldn’t live without me and came back for another visit. At least I got to prove that she did exist. Scott had to remove the chicken from above the freezer, which was a moment in itself. My new friend made a beeline for my neighbor’s back door and proceeded to jump up to the glass and flap her wings against the window. I couldn’t resist. I texted my neighbor… Hey, I know this may sound weird, but there is a chicken trying to get in your garage door. She’s already been here, and I just wanted to let you know. Love, Christi

If You Catch One, He Will Come

We went fishing this weekend. Christian was playing with his friends and didn’t want to come, until he heard we caught a fish. When I say we, I mean Scott.Jackson didn’t fish much. He did do a lot of laying around. I saw both boys sitting on the boat and told them to look at me for a picture. This is what Jackson does when it’s bright outside. It’s VERY attractive, and effective I’m sure.We only caught one more thing the rest of the day. Seriously?

I’ve Always Wanted a Little Black Goat

Once, I went to a petting zoo in Oklahoma City and fell in love with a little baby black goat. I didn’t pet another animal the entire time I was there. When it was time to go, I had a major melt down about taking the goat home with us. My grandmother said later that she was seriously considering asking the people if she could buy it, and what it would cost to ship the goat to Mississippi. I was three, but I’ve never forgotten that goat. I’ve asked for one a zillion times since, but the problem of where I’d keep it always comes up. I think I’m destined to a life without a little black baby goat. Luckily, there are fairs, with livestock, and I occasionally get to visit one. Isn’t it cute? Just ignore the bigger brown one, it’s the little black one I came to see. Jackson was not at all impressed with my little goat, he’s more of a bunny man. What idiot allows their child to put their hands into the cages??? Oh wait… nevermind.
